About the Character Counter
WritePadPro's Character Counter provides real-time character counting with visual progress bars for seven popular platform character limits. Whether you are writing a tweet, crafting a meta description, or composing an Instagram caption, this tool shows you exactly how close you are to the limit — and warns you when you exceed it.
Platform Character Limits
Each platform has different character limits for posts, titles, and descriptions. This tool tracks the most important ones:
- Google Title Tag (60) — Google truncates page titles beyond approximately 60 characters in search results. Keeping your title under this limit ensures it displays completely.
- Meta Description (160) — Google truncates meta descriptions at approximately 160 characters. A well-crafted description within this limit improves click-through rates.
- SMS Message (160) — Standard SMS messages are limited to 160 characters. Longer messages are split into multiple segments.
- Twitter/X Post (280) — Twitter allows 280 characters per tweet. The progress bar shows your usage as a percentage.
- Instagram Caption (2,200) — Instagram captions have a 2,200-character limit. This is generous but worth tracking for longer posts.
- LinkedIn Post (3,000) — LinkedIn limits regular posts to 3,000 characters.
- Facebook Post (63,206) — Facebook has a very generous limit but extremely long posts may be truncated in feeds.
Color-Coded Progress Bars
Each limit has a progress bar that changes color based on usage: blue when well within the limit, amber when approaching the limit (over 80%), and red when the limit is exceeded. When over the limit, the exact number of excess characters is displayed.
Character Breakdown
The detailed breakdown categorizes every character in your text by type: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, digits, spaces (including tabs, newlines), and punctuation. Each category shows the count and percentage of total characters. This is useful for analyzing the composition of passwords, codes, or structured text.
Privacy
All counting uses JavaScript string operations running in your browser. Your text is never transmitted to any server.
Frequently Asked Questions
What character limits does this track?
Seven platform limits with live progress bars: Google Title Tag (60 characters — Google truncates titles beyond this in search results), Meta Description (160 — Google truncates descriptions), SMS Message (160 — standard SMS limit), Twitter/X Post (280), Instagram Caption (2,200), LinkedIn Post (3,000), and Facebook Post (63,206). Each bar is color-coded: blue when safe, amber when approaching the limit, red when over.
Does it count spaces as characters?
The tool shows both counts: "Characters" includes all characters including spaces, and "No Spaces" shows the count without any whitespace. Both update in real-time. Most platform limits (Twitter, Instagram) count spaces as characters, so the total character count is the one to watch for those platforms.
How does it handle Unicode and emoji?
The counter uses JavaScript string length which counts UTF-16 code units. Most characters (including accented letters like e, n, u) count as 1. Some emoji may count as 2 (those encoded as surrogate pairs). This matches how most platforms count characters for their limits.
What does the character breakdown show?
The detailed breakdown categorizes every character: uppercase letters (A-Z), lowercase letters (a-z), digits (0-9), spaces (including tabs and line breaks), and punctuation (everything else). Each category shows the count and percentage of total characters.
Can I use this for SEO meta tag optimization?
Yes. The Google Title Tag (60 chars) and Meta Description (160 chars) progress bars are specifically designed for SEO. Write your title and description here, watch the bars, and keep them in the green zone. When you are satisfied, use our Meta Tag Generator to create the complete HTML tags.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. All counting happens in your browser using JavaScript. Your text never leaves your device.
