About the Grammar & Spell Checker

WritePadPro's Grammar & Spell Checker uses rule-based pattern matching to detect common writing errors in English text. With a database of 200+ misspellings, 11 grammar rules, and 8 detection categories, it catches the most frequent mistakes that writers make — all without sending a single character to any server.

Rule-Based vs AI-Based Checking

AI-based grammar checkers (like Grammarly) use machine learning models that run on remote servers, requiring your text to be transmitted over the internet. Rule-based checkers (like this tool) use predefined patterns that run locally in your browser. The trade-offs:

The Misspelling Database

The 200+ misspellings in the database were selected based on research into the most commonly misspelled English words across academic writing, professional communication, web content, and social media. Each entry maps one incorrect spelling to one correct spelling. The database is embedded directly in the JavaScript code — no external file is loaded, no dictionary API is called.

Privacy

Every check runs entirely in your browser. The misspelling database, grammar rules, and punctuation patterns are all embedded in the client-side JavaScript. Your text is pattern-matched locally and never leaves your device. This makes the tool safe for checking confidential documents, private emails, academic submissions, legal text, and any writing where privacy matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of errors does this detect?

Eight categories: (1) Double words like "the the", (2) Missing capitalization after periods, (3) 200+ common misspellings with corrections, (4) Double punctuation like ".." or "!!", (5) Missing spaces after punctuation, (6) Extra spaces before punctuation, (7) Common grammar errors like "should of" instead of "should have", "their is" instead of "there is", "alot" instead of "a lot", and (8) Lowercase "i" that should be capitalized.

How many misspellings does it detect?

The built-in database contains over 200 of the most commonly misspelled English words, each mapped to its correct spelling. Examples include: "definately" to "definitely", "seperate" to "separate", "occurence" to "occurrence", "accomodate" to "accommodate", "embarass" to "embarrass", "recieve" to "receive", and many more. The list covers words that are frequently misspelled in academic, professional, and casual writing.

Does this use AI or an API?

No. This is a 100% rule-based checker using JavaScript regex patterns and a static misspelling database. Every detection rule is a pattern match — no machine learning, no neural networks, no API calls. This means it is completely predictable (same input always gives same output), transparent (you can see every rule), instant (no server round-trip), and private (your text never leaves your browser).

How does the highlighted view work?

The Highlighted tab shows your original text with detected misspellings and double words marked with a red underline background. This gives you a visual overview of where errors are concentrated in your text. Switch between the Issues tab (detailed list) and Highlighted tab (visual overlay) to review errors in the way that works best for you.

Will this catch every grammar error?

No. Rule-based checkers catch pattern-based errors but cannot understand context or meaning. They detect misspellings, double words, punctuation issues, and specific grammar patterns like "should of." They do NOT detect: incorrect word choice (using "affect" when you mean "effect"), subject-verb agreement errors in complex sentences, comma splice issues, or subtle style problems. For deeper analysis, combine this with our Readability Improver which catches complex sentences and passive voice.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. All pattern matching runs locally in your browser using JavaScript regex and a static word database embedded in the code. Your text is never transmitted, stored, or processed externally. This is safe for checking confidential emails, legal documents, academic papers, and any sensitive writing.
