How to Use

  1. Enter Your Text — Paste or type the text you want to hear read aloud. Any length works — from a single sentence to an entire article. The tool automatically splits text into sentences for highlighting.
  2. Configure Voice Settings — Select a voice from the dropdown (lists all voices installed on your device, grouped by language). Adjust speed (0.5x to 2x) and pitch (0.5 to 2.0) using the sliders.
  3. Play and Follow Along — Click Play to start. The current sentence is highlighted as it is spoken. Use Pause/Resume, Skip Forward/Back, or Stop at any time. Keyboard shortcuts: Space (play/pause), Escape (stop), Arrow keys (skip sentences).

About the Text-to-Speech Studio

WritePadPro's Text-to-Speech Studio is a full-featured TTS tool that reads your text aloud using your browser's built-in Web Speech API. Unlike the simple "Read Aloud" button on the homepage editor, this dedicated page provides voice selection, speed and pitch controls, sentence-by-sentence highlighting, skip navigation, and keyboard shortcuts.

Voice Selection

The voice dropdown lists every speech synthesis voice available on your device, grouped by language. This typically includes:

Speed and Pitch Control

The speed slider ranges from 0.5x (half speed) to 2.0x (double speed). Half speed is useful for language learners or when processing complex content. Double speed is useful for quickly reviewing familiar content. The pitch slider ranges from 0.5 (deep) to 2.0 (high), allowing you to customize the voice tone to your preference.

Sentence Highlighting

As the TTS engine reads your text, the current sentence is highlighted with a bright background in the text panel. Previously read sentences appear dimmed. This creates a "karaoke-style" reading experience where your eyes follow along with the voice. The panel auto-scrolls to keep the current sentence in view, even for very long texts.

Navigation Controls

Five playback controls: Play (starts from the beginning or resumes from pause), Pause (freezes at current position), Stop (resets to beginning), Previous (jumps to the previous sentence), and Next (skips to the next sentence). All controls also have keyboard shortcuts: Space, Escape, Left Arrow, and Right Arrow.

Use Cases

Web Speech API

This tool uses the SpeechSynthesis API built into modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge). It does not require any external service, subscription, or API key. The quality depends on your device's installed voices — newer operating systems include increasingly natural-sounding voices. On Chrome, Google's online voices provide near-natural quality but require an internet connection.

Privacy

For local/offline voices, your text is processed entirely on your device by the operating system's speech engine. Zero network requests. For online voices (marked "[online]" in the dropdown), the browser sends text to Google or Apple servers for synthesis — this is a browser-level behavior, not controlled by WritePadPro. For maximum privacy, always select a local voice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What voices are available?

The voices come from your operating system and browser, not from WritePadPro. Windows includes Microsoft voices (David, Zira, etc.), macOS includes Apple voices (Samantha, Alex, etc.), Chrome may include Google voices, and mobile devices include their own voices. The dropdown lists all available voices grouped by language. Voices marked "[online]" may require internet; all others work offline.

Can I adjust the reading speed?

Yes. The speed slider ranges from 0.5x (half speed — good for language learning) to 2.0x (double speed — good for skimming). The default is 1.0x (natural speed). The estimated reading time updates based on your selected speed, calculated at approximately 150 words per minute at 1.0x.

How does sentence highlighting work?

The text panel below the input shows your text split into sentences. As each sentence is spoken, it is highlighted with a bright cyan background. Already-spoken sentences appear dimmed. Upcoming sentences appear in normal color. The view auto-scrolls to keep the current sentence visible.

What are the keyboard shortcuts?

Spacebar toggles play/pause. Escape stops playback. Left Arrow skips to the previous sentence. Right Arrow skips to the next sentence. These shortcuts work when focus is not in the text input area (so they do not interfere with typing).

Does this work offline?

Most voices work offline because they are installed on your device. Some browsers (especially Chrome) offer additional "online" voices that require an internet connection. The voice dropdown indicates which voices are online. For guaranteed offline use, select a voice without the [online] tag.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. The Web Speech API processes your text using the speech synthesis engine built into your browser and operating system. For local voices, everything happens on your device with zero network requests. For online voices, the text may be sent to Google or Apple servers for synthesis — this is handled by the browser, not by WritePadPro. Choose a local voice for complete privacy.
