How to Use

  1. Paste Your JSON — Type or paste JSON data into the editor. The tool accepts any valid JSON — objects, arrays, nested structures, strings, numbers, booleans, and null values.
  2. Choose an Action — Click Beautify to format with 2-space indentation, Minify to compress to one line, or Validate to check if the JSON is valid. If there is a syntax error, the tool shows the exact line, column, and context of the problem.
  3. Explore & Export — Switch to Tree View to explore nested data with collapsible nodes. Copy the formatted/minified output or download as a .json file. Stats show line count and size comparison.

About the JSON Formatter & Validator

WritePadPro's JSON Formatter & Validator provides three essential operations for working with JSON data: beautification (pretty-printing with indentation), minification (compression to minimal size), and validation (syntax checking with error location). It also includes an interactive tree view for exploring nested JSON structures visually.

Why Format JSON?

Raw JSON from APIs, databases, and configuration files is often either minified (one giant line) or inconsistently formatted. Beautified JSON with proper indentation makes it dramatically easier to:

Error Detection

When JSON is invalid, the tool provides precise error information: the line number and column position of the syntax error, the error message from the parser, and a context snippet showing the characters around the error position. This makes finding and fixing problems fast — especially in large JSON files where a missing comma or extra bracket can be hard to spot visually.

Tree View

The interactive tree view renders your JSON as a collapsible hierarchy. Each object node shows its property count, each array shows its item count. Click the toggle arrows to collapse or expand sections. Values are color-coded by type: strings in cyan, numbers in amber, booleans in green, and null in gray. This visual representation makes it easy to navigate complex API responses, nested configurations, and large data structures.

Minification

The minifier produces the most compact valid JSON by removing all whitespace. For typical JSON with formatting, this achieves 30-60% size reduction. Minified JSON is standard for API communication, localStorage, database storage, and anywhere file size matters. The tool shows the exact size comparison — original bytes vs. minified bytes with percentage savings.

Schema Markup Connection

This tool is especially useful alongside our Schema Markup Generator. Schema markup for SEO uses JSON-LD format — you can validate and format your generated schema here before adding it to your website.

Privacy

All operations use JavaScript's native JSON.parse() and JSON.stringify() — built into every browser. No external parser, no server processing, no data transmission. Your JSON data stays in your browser tab and is never logged, stored, or shared.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Beautify do?

Beautify parses your JSON and re-serializes it with 2-space indentation, proper line breaks, and consistent formatting. This makes deeply nested JSON readable and easy to understand. It uses JavaScript's native JSON.stringify with a space parameter of 2.

What does Minify do?

Minify removes all unnecessary whitespace and line breaks from your JSON, producing the most compact representation. This is useful for reducing file size when transmitting JSON over a network or storing it in a database. The output is valid JSON — just compressed to a single line.

How does error detection work?

When you click Validate (or Beautify/Minify on invalid JSON), the tool uses the browser's native JSON.parse which throws an error with the character position of the problem. The tool then calculates the line number and column from that position and shows the surrounding context so you can find and fix the issue quickly.

What is the Tree View?

Tree View displays your JSON as an interactive, collapsible hierarchy. Objects show their property count, arrays show their item count. Click the arrow icons to collapse or expand sections. This is useful for exploring large JSON responses from APIs or configuration files without scrolling through raw text.

Can it handle large JSON files?

Yes. The tool uses the browser's native JSON.parse and JSON.stringify which are highly optimized C++ implementations. JSON files up to several megabytes parse and format in milliseconds. The tree view may be slower for very large files (10,000+ nodes) due to DOM rendering, but the formatted text output is always fast.

Is my JSON data sent to a server?

No. All parsing, formatting, minification, and validation happens in your browser using JavaScript's built-in JSON methods. Your data never leaves your device. This is safe for API keys, configuration data, user records, and any sensitive JSON.
